The Soriana Sofa design Tobia Scarpa 1970s is all original and authentic and in very good condition. The Soriana is a very iconic and timeless design, thought to be very radical when architect Tobia Scarpa presented it to the owners of furniture maker Cassina in 1969. But then people welcomed the design which was very simple yet complex with this abundant buttoned seats and the whole wrinkly fabric wrapped and held by metal clamps. Critics understood the concept and the potential and the visionary design and the sofa won the Compasso D’Oro award, a highly recognized design award in Italy. The Soriana was a success until production came to an end as the world of interiors was taking different directions. Fast forward to our modern days, Designers discovered the potential and value of Mid Century Italian Design, and the Soriana came back in full power, sitting in the living rooms of the most influential Designers and Celebrities around the world making cover pages in design magazines and popping up at antique dealers stores.

Afra and Tobia Scarpa have put their know-how into products ranging from home furniture to clothing. Their works can be found in museums across the USA and Europe as in the Moma and the Louvre. They won several awards such as the prestigious Italian “Compasso D’Oro” with the Soriana design, and and the International Forum Design in 1992. Tobia’s father Carlo Scarpa was also a great architect and designers from the Mid Century Period and worked with famous names such as historic Ventian Murano glass company Venini, where also Tobia worked later on. Some of the major works of the two architects include the Coronado Sofa for B&B Italia (1966) and the Soriana Sofa for Cassina 1970. With Gavina they created the “Bastiano” sofa (1961) and they designed the "Papillona" and "Pierrot" lamps for Flos in the 1977 and 1990. Their works extended to fashion where they thrived in a collaboration with fashion house Benetton. Their products played an important role in the history of Italian Design and are thriving in the Mid Century market.
